OCLL Cares - Supporting Our Community
Orangecrest Little League embarks on a new endeavor this Fall. I have long believed that youth sport has the opportunity to teach many life lessons that extend beyond the game. The experience of playing a team sport within a community simulates so many of the interactions that occur in life: teamwork, problem resolution, overcoming adversity and humility.
This fall, we are adding a new element and encouraging our players and families to seize opportunities to give back and help those in need within our community. We are inviting ALL our OCLL Families to join us in three very important events that will give us the opportunity to let those that face challenges know that their community embraces and supports them.
Each month during our Fall Season, we will be sponsoring a different “Give Back” campaign that will directly impact our local community. Along the way, we will be teaching our players that teamwork not only means supporting your immediate team, but to also strive to help those in need within your community in whatever way you can contribute.
In September, we will be conducting a letter writing campaign for our military veterans and active service members. We will invite players and families to write letters or draw pictures, showing appreciation for those who stand to defend our freedom. March Air Force Space Museum will be help deliver our messages to veterans and service personnel with ties to our community, wherever they currently may be.
In October, we will highlight cancer awareness month and will be selling pink wristbands that players can wear in games (and families can wear in the stands) throughout the month and offer support and strength for those who have been or are currently impacted by cancer. All of the proceeds generated will be donated to local organizations: The Believe Walk & Inland Woman Fighting Cancer and Riverside Community Breast Cancer Center, to support research and treatment within our community.
Lastly, in November, we will be collecting donations for Path of Life, an organization that assists transitionally homeless families to get re-established in their own homes. We’ll be encouraging each team, and anybody else, to donate a laundry basket filled with key items that help families get started when placed in a home.
Although the success of these efforts will be a total OCLL Community effort, I would like to personally thank the OCLL Board for their support and especially, Board Member Vanessa Triggs for spearheading these ideas. Her enthusiasm to rally our baseball community to help others, has helped to launch a new element to OCLL – further demonstrating that we are so much more than a youth sports league.
I ask that our OCLL Community share my excitement with these new “Give Back” campaigns and for all families to participate in whatever way you are able. We are blessed to be able to come together and enjoy our players growth and enjoyment on the baseball field. This is just one more opportunity to teach them valuable lessons that they can carry far beyond the baseball field. Watch out for more details on each event to come.
Sometimes, in the spirit of competition, we oppose one another, but when the game is over, we shake hands and congratulate each other on a game well played. Together we remain, One Community.
